AI agents vs AI assistants: what is the difference?
An AI assistant responds inside a conversation: it answers questions, drafts text and explains things. An AI agent takes a goal and carries it out: it plans steps, uses tools such as a browser, acts on websites, checks with you on consequential actions, and returns finished work. Many products now do both; the difference is whether the software acts or only advises.

- Unit of work
- Assistant: a reply. Agent: a task with steps.
- Tools
- Assistant: optional. Agent: essential (web, browser, files).
- Time
- Assistant: seconds. Agent: minutes to hours, sometimes on a schedule.
- Output
- Assistant: text. Agent: deliverables such as files, bookings and confirmations.
- Human role
- Assistant: you do the doing. Agent: you approve, take over, and review.
Why the distinction matters
Acting raises the stakes. An assistant that is wrong costs you a re-read. An agent that is wrong can submit a form or spend money. That is why agent design is mostly about control: live views, approvals, scoped sessions and honest limits.
How Pebs handles the agent side
- A plan you can read before anything runs.
- A Cloud Browser you can watch and take over.
- Secure cards for sign-ins and card details that never pass through the model.
- Confirm-first for sends, purchases and submissions.
- A deliverable at the end of each step.
